It is actually uncommon for family- travel-first aid kits to have scalpels in them as there is a great potential for harm. The first aid kits that contain scalpels would be more for a medical practitioner to use. The back of an unopened first aid kit should always list out the equipment that is inside, so check those out before you purchase your kit.
