I have been playing minecraft for years but I've never joined a surver.
Yo. I dont know how to join the surver lol
Here is a quick step by 
1. Click the Multiplayer tab
2. Add a server!
3. Name the server as you like and add in the IP address ( a good one is play.auscraft.net)
4. Find your newly added server in the list and click the little play icon :D
