It is advised to stay on 1.7.3 until the server upgrades to 1.8 so that you can still play on the server.
If you update to 1.8 you will have to wait however long it takes the Bukkit team to get a recommended build out for the new version.
We will advise you when it is ready for 1.8 and then you can update.
